Building Materials

Project One - My Home My Space

Building material is any material which is used for a construction purpose. Our first exercise is designed as an introduction to building materials that are commonly used in the local construction industry. I was required to
identify five(5) materials that are being used in any space in my own house. I then required to do a catalog of these materials and describe them through photographs, sketches and some descriptions. With this project, I get to identify different materials used for construction/ finishes/ furnishings, to describe the general usage of material to use the findings and produce proper documentation.

Below is the work that I have produced:

Project Two - Materiality of SPACE

I am required to form a group of 5, and select a building which allow me to experience and explore most of the building materials covered in the module. I am required to produce two landscape A2 boards and mood board, who introduce and identify the applications and types of materials used in the building, such as physical and chemical properties of materials. On the other hand, another individual board that explain about spatial experience influenced by the Material, design intention and concepts.

PROJECT 3: INTEGRATION WITH STUDIO FINAL PROJECT

For the final project,I am required to prepare a material specification board as well, for the integration of building materials and design Studio 1, I need to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of Building Materials application and properties through selection of materials and how they affect my design in aesthetic and functional way.

REFLECTION:

At the end of this project, I am able to apply the understanding of various types of building material which affects the tactile and chemical properties of my design space. Besides that, I learned to explore and identify various types of building materials and technology and I am able to produce drawings to visualize the architectural effects of proposed materials in a different way.

Architecture Culture and History 1

PROJECT: PRECEDENT STUDIES

In a group of 4, we were required to conduct analysis with my group mates on specific building from the Palladanian Period, which is Victoria and Albert museum through drawing, written essay, model making and verbal presentation.

Below is the attached essay of our work:

Presentation board - Individual

  1. I found a lot of information on our assigned building. have more information available than others. Our analysis includesConcept analysis (building concept and/or architect concepts), building massing analysis (structure, geometry), circulation Analysis, spatial organization analysis (public vs. private, symmetry & balance, unit to whole, repetitive to unique, additive and subtractive, hierarchy), building section analysis.

        1. We are to create a model to communicate with our personal analysis. Our model is a portion of the entire project that it is high significance. Our model consists of the important structure components, ideas and concept of our precedent. Our model must be 30cm x 30cm with the depth of 10cm made of balsa only.

Below is the model done by my group and I:

        Reflection:

Through out this entire project, I am able to recognize and recall appropriate verbal architectural vocabulary when referring to building types, styles and periods which is the Palladanian period and our building which is Victoria and Albert Museum. We get to exemplify the sequence of historical periods and how they are represented architecturally, classify the sequence of historical periods and how they are represented architecturally and produce building analysis which document intentions, concepts, patterns, disciplines, architectural language and contextual relationships.

Design Communication

Project one - On-Site Sketching

Our first project was to understand a particullar site by exploring. During our observation, we were asked to record observation and visualize the spaces and the human habitation through free-hand sketches. Later we were assigned to include both exterior and interior spaces as our observation analysis. By the end of this project, we understand the notion of space in architecture with a much wider view. Besides that, this project also developed our skills in visualizing space through observation and perception of the site. Our skills in sketching as a mode of communication also improved.

PROJECT 1B  :TONAL VALUES

The very next assignment was to produce four variations of a tonal value sketch based on our chosen object. Later we then had to explore the types sketches in the different hatching type which includes stippling, cross-hatching, one-directional and scribbling. We were allowed to use media such as pen, pencil and charcoal. Throughout this project, it allows us to understand the notion of space in architecture. Besides that, it also developed our skills in communicating the above in various tonal and depth values. We were also exposed to various techniques of hatching through different medium.

Project 2A : Orthographic projections: plans, sections, elevations

In this project, we are to utilize the given images of a simple building to be drawn up. By using the skills demonstrated and explained in the lectures,  we drew the following required orthographic drawings. In this project, we learnt that we are to demonstrate drafting skills in modern and traditional methods of architectural drawing, to record and present clear and legible architectural information manually and to identify and apply architectural conventions and symbols precisely. Besides that, we also learnt how to demonstrate with both pencil and ink in drawing line weights, line types, line quality and hand lettering.

Below are the drawings that I have produced:

Project 2B : Axonometric projection

In this project 3,  with the work for the Orthographic Projections assignment that we did, we would have fairly
in-depth understanding of the architectural detail and spatial value of the Barcelona Pavilion. By having this axonometric drawing, we are able to express spatial ideas and architectural detail in three-dimension, in the format of an axonometric projection. Besides that, we also learn how to understand what axonometric projections are, how to generate them and how to apply them to the design process and presentation. Most importantly, we are ability to produce legible architectural drawings.

Below are the drawings that I have produced:

Project 2C :  Perspective Drawing

This assessment introduces perspective as a mode of communication in architecture. You are required to construct firstly, one exterior (two point) perspective followed by one sectional interior perspective (one-point) as illustrated on the first page. n constructing both these perspectives, you are to demonstrate the ability to express spatial idea in 3D form, understanding of 2-D and 3-D relationships in architectural graphics, skills in drawing and composition, creativity and complexity of drawing. Also, your selection of space and exterior form is significant. Throughout this project, we are able to express spatial ideas and architectural detail in three-dimension, in the format of one-point and two-point perspectives. Besides that, we also got a full understanding of what perspectives (and its different types) are, how to generate them and how to apply them to the design process and presentation.
