Design Communication

Project one - On-Site Sketching

Our first project was to understand a particullar site by exploring. During our observation, we were asked to record observation and visualize the spaces and the human habitation through free-hand sketches. Later we were assigned to include both exterior and interior spaces as our observation analysis. By the end of this project, we understand the notion of space in architecture with a much wider view. Besides that, this project also developed our skills in visualizing space through observation and perception of the site. Our skills in sketching as a mode of communication also improved.

PROJECT 1B  :TONAL VALUES

The very next assignment was to produce four variations of a tonal value sketch based on our chosen object. Later we then had to explore the types sketches in the different hatching type which includes stippling, cross-hatching, one-directional and scribbling. We were allowed to use media such as pen, pencil and charcoal. Throughout this project, it allows us to understand the notion of space in architecture. Besides that, it also developed our skills in communicating the above in various tonal and depth values. We were also exposed to various techniques of hatching through different medium.

Project 2A : Orthographic projections: plans, sections, elevations

In this project, we are to utilize the given images of a simple building to be drawn up. By using the skills demonstrated and explained in the lectures,  we drew the following required orthographic drawings. In this project, we learnt that we are to demonstrate drafting skills in modern and traditional methods of architectural drawing, to record and present clear and legible architectural information manually and to identify and apply architectural conventions and symbols precisely. Besides that, we also learnt how to demonstrate with both pencil and ink in drawing line weights, line types, line quality and hand lettering.

Below are the drawings that I have produced:

Project 2B : Axonometric projection

In this project 3,  with the work for the Orthographic Projections assignment that we did, we would have fairly
in-depth understanding of the architectural detail and spatial value of the Barcelona Pavilion. By having this axonometric drawing, we are able to express spatial ideas and architectural detail in three-dimension, in the format of an axonometric projection. Besides that, we also learn how to understand what axonometric projections are, how to generate them and how to apply them to the design process and presentation. Most importantly, we are ability to produce legible architectural drawings.

Project 2C :  Perspective Drawing

This assessment introduces perspective as a mode of communication in architecture. You are required to construct firstly, one exterior (two point) perspective followed by one sectional interior perspective (one-point) as illustrated on the first page. n constructing both these perspectives, you are to demonstrate the ability to express spatial idea in 3D form, understanding of 2-D and 3-D relationships in architectural graphics, skills in drawing and composition, creativity and complexity of drawing. Also, your selection of space and exterior form is significant. Throughout this project, we are able to express spatial ideas and architectural detail in three-dimension, in the format of one-point and two-point perspectives. Besides that, we also got a full understanding of what perspectives (and its different types) are, how to generate them and how to apply them to the design process and presentation.
